The SBI-6: discussions and progress on global biodiversity goals
On 16-19 February 2026, the sixth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-6) took place in Rome, Italy. This meeting is part of several events preceding the seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, which will take place in Armenia this autumn.
Representatives of parties and relevant stakeholders gathered for four days of discussions on strengthening the implementation and cooperation in the context of the UN CBD goals. Among the topics were:
- biodiversity finance and resources;
- updates on national biodiversity strategies, targets, action plans and reporting;
- progress in the implementation of the Gender Plan of Action;
- capacity-building, technical and scientific cooperation;
- collaborations with other organisations;
- specialised international access and benefit-sharing instruments;
- review of the effectiveness of the UN CBD processes.
During SBI-6, several Parties, including the European Union, announced the submission of their 7th National Reports. Based on the overall reported progress on implementation, a report on the global progress in implementing the KM-GBF targets will be prepared and presented during COP17 this October.
